Man Utd put in another underwhelming-ish display in pre-season as they were gunned down by Arsenal at the Stan Kroenk-owned SoFi Stadium in Los Angeles.

This match did see some positive moments from the Red Devils though, and offered us a glimpse into what we could potentially get from them in the upcoming season.

However, the majority of the performance was less than savory.

The result may not be such a big issue (although a defeat and one to Arsenal will always leave a bad taste in the mouth) as pre-season is more about improving fitness and playing style, two things which Erik ten Hag really needs to improve with his side.

But it does looks like not much was learned from this defeat - United's second of three games so far - as MUFC played in a similar manner to that which they performed for most of last season.

United began the game pretty well as the returning Rasmus Hojlund gave ten Hag's team the lead in the 10th minute. Some good hold up play by the forward was followed by a neat turn to get around the defender before he drove with the ball and slotted it in through the goalkeeper's legs.

Very good goal by the 21-year-old who made his first appearance for United in pre-season.

Not long after that Hojlund goal though, Gabriel Jesus equalized in the 26th minute to pull things back to 1-1. This showcased another problem that United had from last season as we concede a goal not long after scoring displaying that lack of concentration once again.

While it may be pre-season, this is the time to right some wrongs. We haven't seemed to have done that.

There were some other promising moments by United as the likes of Marcus Rashford, Aaron Wan-Bissaka and Andre Onana (who made some good saves although his distribution was questionable) were some of the better players along with youngsters Harry Amass and Toby Collyer who was arguably our best player.

That is both a good and bad sign as it's great to have a young player perform so well but when he outshines the seniors, it is a bit of problem.

Once again, Erik ten Hag switched his entire team to give minutes to those on the bench which included the likes of Jonny Evans, Christian Eriksen, Scott McTominay, Antony and Jadon Sancho. Not an entirely crap team to bring on, in terms of names at least.

Much like the rest of the team and pre-season though, this XI failed to flatter as well and I'm mainly looking at the senior pros.

Eriksen and McTominay never really displayed anything of note to suggest that they could push for a start next season. Their performances wasn't anything that would also get the clubs who are interested in them licking their lips at the prospect of this guy joining their team.

At least put yourself in the shop window lads!

The same could be said of Antony and Sancho.

The Brazilian did his trademark head down, cut in and shoot off his left-foot throughout the game whereas Sancho was sort of out of the game.

It looks likely that Sancho will leave so this gives even more incentive to Antony to try to get into the starting lineup next season as that means it is one less player to compete for your spot, and a player that a lot of fans wouldn't mind seeing start ahead of you as well.

Antony didn't really take his opportunity as even Amad is now most likely ahead of him as well to add to the likes of Marcus Rashford and Alejandro Garnacho.

I'm hoping that with a coach like Ruud van Nistelrooy, he will try to get this selfishness out of our wingers as to have wide players like that as a striker will mean a lack of service, something else that we need to imrpove upon. van Nistelrooy himself didn't like when a certain Cristiano Ronaldo was doing a few too many stepovers and not playing the ball into the box.

In the 81st minute, another Gabriel in Martinelli sealed the deal as he scored to make it 2-1 and give Arsenal the win.

Proceedings didn't end there as much like last year's pre-season, Arsenal and United played out a penalty shootout despite their being a winner.

United managed to salvage something from this game as they walked away with a 4-3 win from the spot kicks with Jadon Sancho scoring the winning penalty.

Andre Onana was also trying his best to put off some Arsenal players in the shootout as he attempted some very different tactics to throw the Gunners' players off their game.

It didn't work. At all, and made the 'keeper appear somewhat silly in this b-tech version of Emi Martinez.

United's woes weren't entirely compounded by the defeat (and Onana's oddities) as both Rasmus Hojlund and new signing Leny Yoro had to be taken off because of injuries. This is another area that United need to better as injuries plagued our campaign last year.

So far, nothing has come out about their knocks although Erik ten Hag did say that "we have to wait over 24 hours and then we know hopefully more", via Manchester Evening News.

Up until Hojlund and Yoro got injured, United weren't too bad, and by that I mean they weren't entirely shite.

But there is still much to be done in terms of getting ready for the new season as United still don't look anywhere near ready for the start of the campaign which begins with that Community Shield game against Man City on 3 August, just two weeks away.

Yeah, I can talk and talk and talk about the things I love, like football and United, as you can see in this post. Once I get on a roll, it's pretty hard to stop me. This is all coming from a guy who doesn't talk that much. How weird.
