Christian Eriksen's future

Where does it lie?

In a recent interview the midfielder conducted whilst on national team duty with Denmark, Eriksen spoke about his future both at MUFC and for his country.

The author of this story Kristian Porse clarified that Eriksen "wants to take the national team into consideration when he takes the next step. And that he has not yet discussed an extension with United."

There were some reports coming out from this interview saying that Eriksen confirmed his decision to leave the club at the end of the season when his contract expires. Clearly that was misread.

The Dane is contracted to United until June 2025 after signing a three-year deal in 2022.

So while it is not definite either way, this got me thinking, what do we do with Christian Eriksen? What does he want to do?

After what was an impressive first season at the club in 22/23, which was perhaps a little surprising considering how good and important he turned out to be, he did fall away last season as he couldn't really find a rhythm to his game due to regular injuries.

These injuries all seemed to have come about after that horrific tackle on him by Andy Carroll in January 2023 during an FA Cup tie.

Eriksen hadn't been the same since.

This season though, he is at the moment, our best and more astonishingly, most reliable midfielder in terms of performances and availability.

Who saw that coming?

After having not featured much in the first three games, Eriksen has become one of Erik ten Hag's most trusted players having been played the most out of any midfielder post the September internationals. He has played 515 minutes which is more than any other midfielder including the machine that is Bruno Fernandes.

Eriksen's performances have been some of the best and most consistent we've seen out of any player this season. While he has his weaknesses as he isn't the most mobile or physical, what he has done is shown us his quality in other areas such as on the ball and going forward.

He has 3 goals and 3 assists so far putting him at the top of the list with 6 goal involvements which is tied with Garnacho.

The fact that the number 14 has been available all season and is able to play three games a week shows that he is still more than capable of playing regular first-team football even when the games come every couple of days.

This was perhaps more surprising than his performances given Eriksen's age and heart condition.

As he is now a key player for us, what do we do with him?

We've added a new addition to our midfield in Ugarte although ten Hag is reluctant to use him, Casemiro has been poor and Mount is unreliable. We know that ten Hag isn't going to drop both Mainoo and Bruno so Eriksen has to play in that midfield.

If he can continue in this form, do the club give him a new contract?

Eriksen said not so long ago that he is happy in Manchester and so is his family and has given no indication of leaving despite all thinking his time was up last summer.

Ugarte looks like he'll take time, Mount is injury prone, Casemiro looks to have lost his footballing ability, Mainoo hasn't been great and Bruno has been awful. So with our midfield looking very average, it could perhaps be a chance for Eriksen to stay beyond next summer, if he continues to play like he is.

Would I keep him? I don't actually see what's the problem with holding onto him for at least one more year. With his experience, knowledge and ability which is still evident, a player like him could be quite valuable.

He could also be a rotational option whenever required.

It could be a similar situation to what we have with Jonny Evans.

This all depends on how the rest of the season goes for him but right now, he cannot be dropped. I would like to see him given a chance at CAM instead of Bruno as that is where I believe we can see the best of Eriksen.

Speaking about not knowing his future when it comes to the national team, if he does end up retiring from international football, then that's more of a reason to keep him as he will be more available for the club.

Would you keep him? Or should this be his last season?

Yeah, I can talk and talk and talk about the things I love, like football and United, as you can see in this post. Once I get on a roll, it's pretty hard to stop me. This is all coming from a guy who doesn't talk that much. How weird.
