He shoulda done

Yesterday was the first time Garnacho started on the bench in a while. We've seen him begin matches on the left and occasionally on the right but regardless of position, he is always in the starting XI.

I did a post not so long ago talking about Garnacho and how I think his inconsistencies has to do with being overplayed rather than being overrated or overhated.

I still believe that that's the case.

This is why I also believe he sometimes needs matches where he is benched just for simple rest but also because he can be quite frustrating in terms of his performances due to poor decision-making, poor passing, being too selfish and a couple other things.

Benching him removes that while also giving him a rest and a bit of a kick up the arse in that there is a chance someone could take my place if I don't perform. Healthy competition is good.

But him not celebrating his 'banger' as his captain Bruno Fernandes labeled it, against Leicester was not something that I was entirely happy with.

I actually thought the goal was disallowed for whatever reason due to the lack of celebration.

Obviously that goal stood and it made me think that maybe that lack of the 'Suiiii' or sitting with arms and legs crossed on the adevertising boards in homage to his hero Cristiano Ronaldo was because he let some of the criticism and negativity towards him get to him.

The fact that he let the words of the few toxic or hateful people towards him get to him instead of listening to the words of the many who are behind him, doesn't sit well with me.

That fan interaction before the game against PAOK was actually something I didn't have a problem with both from the fan and Garnacho.

Perhaps the fan came on a little strongly but what did he actually say that was wrong? Garnacho's passing at times has been off, his first touch can be lacking and on top of that, like I said his decision-making is one of his biggest problems.

I'm sure a lot of fans feel the same whenever Garnacho does make mistakes that honestly, he shouldn't be making as often as he does given his quality.

But I also like Garnacho's response as it is always great to see your players give some back.

I feel like this type of criticism is fair and the thing is, we only criticize him because we know how good he can be. This goes for all players that we rate highly and there's not many that we rate as highly as Garnacho at United.

I mean, who's the likeliest of the current squad to win a Ballon d'Or?

If we didn't rate him that much and he goes out there continues to make the same mistakes and plays shit, we'll be like 'well, what else do we expect? He's shit.'

But we don't. We actually feel he can be a lot better than he is and what frustrates me about Garnacho and the mistakes he makes is that they're simple stuff. Not passing when he should; taking too long on the ball; not controlling it well enough; being too selfish. Those aren't actually things that are too difficult to remove from one's game.

And with Amorim coming in, his style doesn't entertain that sort of football. It is very technical and possession-based with a lot of work on and off the ball, another area where Garnacho isn't quite at the level yet: work rate.

The Portuguese manager also uses wing-backs with wingers in those positions rather than full-backs. This means that it is potentially a shootout between Garnacho, Amad, Rashford and Antony for those two wide positions. But if you don't work hard and still have some issues with the basics, you could have a problem.

Now to be fair to Garnacho, he isn't the only player who needs to be careful when it comes to potentially not getting into an Amorim side as we have many who struggle with a lot of things that the new boss requires of his team.

I get that a lot of what I just said is negative towards Garnacho but again, I have to emphasize it's only because I rate him so highly that I say such things. I wouldn't be if I thought he was useless and don't understand what he's doing at the club.

Garnacho ain't that.

People also need to remember that he is only 20-years-old! He's not even in his prime nor close to it and so, there is still a lot of developing that needs to happen.

The fact that we rely on him to play as much as he does (which is a skill in itself to be available all the time) and also perform at a 7 or 8/10 most games is pretty unreal for one so young. To have that much weight on his shoulders at that age is too much.

We are also a club that is about nurturing young players and giving them time so we shouldn't be expecting a hell of a lot from Garnacho.

But the fact that we are again, just shows how high we do rate him.

He really shouldn't be letting some of the negativity towards him get to his head to a point where he doesn't celebrate goals. Seeing his team-mates get behind him and try to cheer him up is great but I don't think we should've been in that position in the first place.

If that is his mentality, then maybe we have a bit of a problem. He should follow his idol Ronaldo in this in that he said 'your love makes me strong. Your hate makes me unstoppable.' That's the mentality he and the rest of his team-mates need to have should they want to be at United.

He cannot be letting the words of a few affect so much when there are many more out there who actually back him.

I find that there are people that are too pro Garnacho and are too positive to a point where he may think that he is the complete player or it's the other way in that people are too toxic towards him. It's in the middle that we need to meet.

He isn't so terrible a player and person to a point where we should hate on him and but nor do I think we should constantly praise him and not criticize him as that isn't great as well.

His only critic should be himself. Forget about what the rest have to say.

C'mon star boy, you're better than this, in more ways than one.

I still back you, I still believe in you and I know that with some tightening of the screws in your game, you can be one hell of a player.

Viva Garnacho.

Yeah, I can talk and talk and talk about the things I love, like football and United, as you can see in this post. Once I get on a roll, it's pretty hard to stop me. This is all coming from a guy who doesn't talk that much. How weird.
