The French footballer revealed yesterday that he would like to LEAVE Bayern Munich this January, which came as a surprise considering how out of the blue it was.
Fabrizio Romano says that "Mathys Tel has just decided to leave Bayern in January!
Bayern and player side will assess all the options on the market."
However, he also added that Chelsea are the club who have asked for Tel but does inform us that "there are more clubs also keen... race open."
β
German reporter Florian Plettenberg says that United "considering entering the race for Mathys #Tel in the event of a departure of Alejandro Garnacho or Marcus Rashford."
Much like Romano, Plettenberg says that it is an open race but that United are one of several teams who are "very well informed."
β
Tel is a 19-year-old left-winger/forward (similar to Garnacho and Rashford) and has been at Bayern since 2022 with a contract that runs until June 2029, meaning he has four-and-a-half years left on his current deal.
He's played 82 games for the German giants scoring 16 times and grabbing 7 assists in his 3 years so far.
However, this season, Tel has played just 13 out of a potential 29 matches for Bayern and only featured in 396 minutes of those games.
This is probably the reason as to why he wants to leave as this is not the amount of football a youngster would want to be playing so it's understandable that he wants out. He is also not going to play ahead of the likes of Leroy Sane, Serge Gnabry, Kingsley Coman and Harry Kane, all players who play in Tel's preferred positions.

Final Thoughts

β
I don't know much about Tel but he's obviously a talent to have been playing for Bayern for so many years and have so many clubs looking at signing him.
I have seen a bit of him when watching Bayern in the Champions League and I remember him scoring against us in last season's competition. But while he looked decent, it wasn't anything amazing and he was never really going to play ahead of all those others resulting in limiting us from seeing what he's all about.
β
Bringing him in if one of or both Garnacho and Rashford leave would make sense because we would be short in those wide positions as after Antony's loan to Real Betis and potentially selling these two means that we only have Amad as a winger.
Ideally though, we should have Tel and Garnacho and/or Rashford. While I would bring him in if Garnacho leaves, IΒ want them both. The two profiles of players are very similar when looking at their age, potential and position so we may as well keep Garnacho.
Our star boy has also been a mainstay and key player for us over the past season-and-a-half so he has the edge over Tel there. Plus from what we've seen of Garnacho, he can be that Ballon d'Or quality player in the future. I'm not sure it's the same with Tel although again, I haven't seen much of him.
β
There hasn't been any price put to Tel's name as of yet but after having done two good deals with Bayern in the summer (Mazraoui and De Ligt) I don't think there would be too many issues between the clubs and I've never seen Bayern overcharge for players in the past. Forgive me if I'm wrong on that.
I'd rather Chelsea get Tel and leave Garnacho. That would be great and from the news we're seeing, the Blues do look like favorites to sign him. They also apparently are looking at swapping Christopher Nkunku for Tel with Bayern. Nkunku to United as part of the deal for Garnacho was (and still is) on the cards.
Just do the deal with Bayern, Chelsea. It's the right thing to do π.
I wouldn't take Tel for Garnacho or Rashford but would rather take him with Garnacho and Rashford at United, or at least one of those. I don't want Garnacho to go at all and we need at least three wingers at the club. I'd like that to be Amad, Garnacho and Tel.
At least Tel doesn't have much of an injury history as well so that's a positive too.
β
Mathys Tel's record compared to Garnacho, Rashford, Hojlund and Zirkzee since the start of last season:
β
Tel:
Games - 54
Goals - 10
Assists - 7
β
Garnacho:
Games - 84
Goals - 18
Assists - 10
β
Rashford:
Games - 67
Goals - 15
Assists - 8
β
Hojlund:
Games - 71
Goals - 23
Assists - 3
β
Zirkzee:
Games - 70
Goals - 16
Assists - 9
β
I don't think he'll come to us anyway but it's still an interesting option.
What do you make of this news?
