Swedish set-piece coach Andreas Georgson has joined Erik ten Hag's coaching staff as was announced by the club this afternoon.

The 42-year-old left his role at Lillestrom in Norway in order to join United.

The Swede's previous works have been as a caretaker of Malmo, as well as jobs at Brentford, Arsenal and Southampton.

Final Thoughts

This is a good appointment simply because we need to improve at set-pieces. United have been atrocious at these for many years as even former set play coach Eric Ramsay really struggled to make any improvements.

I don't ever feel like we are a threat from set plays and whenever the opposition have one of their own, a little poo comes out. I have no confidence in this team in either box as far too often, we look very tame at set-pieces.

I can't remember the last time we scored from a corner, free-kick or directly from a free-kick.

We suck at set plays.

Georgson comes in with a good reputation as fans of one of his previous club Southampton did have some very good (and encouraging words for United) about the Swede.

Saints Statistics (@TheStatsSaint on X) gives a really great and in-depth analysis into how Georgson revolutionized Southampton's set-pieces.

According to Saints Statistics, the 42-year-old "turned the shortest team into the best for set-pieces in the Championship."

In the 22/23 season, the Saints ended up being relegated from the Premier League to the Championship with a major reason being their inability to score from set-pieces. While James Ward-Prowse scored three direct free-kicks, only six were scored from headers.

However, in the Championship after Georgson's appointment, Southampton's fortunes changed as they managed a staggering 14 goals from corners alone, which was the fifth-best in the league whilst having the shortest side.

But Georgson isn't only focused on attacks as defensively, the Saints were magnificent as well.

In 49 games across the campaign, the Southampton conceded just 7 goals all season. 7.

Compare that with United's set-pieces last season, as I said, I can't remember how many goals we scored from set plays but we definitely conceded quite a few.

Saints Statistics coming in clutch again with the numbers as they said that United conceded the third-most corners last season with more than 40% leading to a shot at goal with Erik ten Hag's side only scoring 8 goals from headers last campaign with just 2 from corners.

At least we scored 2 🤷‍♂️.

So this Andreas Georgson then, he seems to know what he's on about. I must admit, I'd never heard of him until he was linked with United, similarly to the likes of Jason Wilcox and Omar Berrada.

Speaking of Wilcox, perhaps he had a part to play in this appointment given his Southampton connections as well.

I trust this new setup at MUFC so if they deem anyone good enough to join the club, then I'm on board 👍.

Saints Statistics also go more in-depth on the tactics used by Georgson to improve teams at set plays. Pretty great read by them.

Yeah, I can talk and talk and talk about the things I love, like football and United, as you can see in this post. Once I get on a roll, it's pretty hard to stop me. This is all coming from a guy who doesn't talk that much. How weird.
