Why?
Simply put, Ruben Amorim "was not considering Obi as a senior player and said the forward was someone who might get an opportunity later in the season", according to the BBC.
They also say that while "clubs were allowed to add three new players to the 'A' list of their 25-player European squad" and that United had included Patrick Dorgu and Ayden Heaven, the two January recruits, it was the manager who decided against Chido Obi joining that squad as he believed he was not quite ready for the step up.
But that now leaves us a little short in attack, and by a little short, I mean with nothing. We have nothing in attack.
With the form (or lack thereof) of Rasmus Hojlund and Joshua Zirkzee who, despite being very impressive as one of the two number 10s, isn't a striker. He is more suited to that deeper position.
Even if he did play up front, he wasn't really showing signs that he was the man to do the job as United's number 9.

Between him and Hojlund, the pair have scored just 12 goals. They have played a total of 75 matches across all competitions this season.
12 in 75. For Man Utd's strikers.
We need a new striker.
I know we do not create as many chances for the centre-forward as we would like but that is still no excuse for that number as that is categorically shit.
When Chido Obi came on against Fulham, he showed more than both Hojlund and Zirkzee as striker as he did put himself about, showed greater anticipation and was more of a threat in the box.
In his time on the field, the 17-year-old had 3 big chances which is the same as Hojlund in 22 league games.
That is quite ridiculous.
This shows that it doesn't all depend on just the team to create those goal scoring opportunities. It also depends on movement, link up play and that anticipation in the box, of which at the moment, neither Zirkzee nor Hojlund have.
Due to this, fans want a change in that position and with the talent of Obi and running out of patience with Hojlund in particular, I think many believe it is time to let the lad play.
Of course, that won't be possible for the next match and all the Europa League games we play which will hopefully be quite a few, meaning that we will have to rely on an underperforming, low on confidence pretty young striker himself in Hojlund.
It was silly when you look back on it now that United and Amorim made this type of call to not include the youngster.
This could be a difference-maker in this competition and season overall as the Europa League provides the only chance of United making this season not look truly horrendous.
But no Chido Obi for the Europa League. What do you make of that?
