The United boss did another one of his now customary interviews this time with Sky Sports (how many is that now?) in which he spoke about many things including the position of the team as well as the aims for the future.
And it may not be quite what you think.
Amorim had this to say regarding the current situation of United and what he seems is of utmost importance for the now:
“We lost last week in the FA Cup, so people consider the Europa League as the only competition we can win, there is also the link between winning the Europa League and the Champions League, but to tell you the truth, I think we have more important things to think about.
“I know it's strange to say this, but it's something we're trying to build here that will be more important than winning a cup right now. I know we have the responsibility to fight for every trophy, but right now we're trying to build something that will last longer than any trophy this season" - via centredevils.
This sounds more like Erik ten Hag!
With these comments, it is the first time where I’ve felt concerned about Amorim and I thought to myself, is it time?
Is it time that he now starts talking shite? This is something that has happened to recent managers in which when they first come to the club they will actually talk a lot of sense that connects with the fans because it’s what the majority feel.
It would be so refreshing to hear the honest assessment from the United boss.
Eventually though, they would get to a point where they start talking shit.
This is exactly what happened to our previous manager as he too began by saying a lot of things we liked. It was honest and unfiltered which wasn’t what we were getting with Solskjaer. Ralf Rangnick had this brutal honesty as well but he was sacked probably before he could start talking nonsense.
The only difference with Amorim is that this is coming just three months into his reign at United. The others took a little while (at least a season) before the shit came out.
I’m not sure what Amorim is getting at.
“I think we have more important things to think about.”
Bro, what are you talking about more important things?! As the manager, I don’t think you can focus on much more than what’s going on on the field, as you said yourself not so long ago. All he and the players can do is go out there and play as good a football as they can.
Clearly we’re not going to play great football for a plethora of reasons but what we do have are vibes, moments and some quality players that against certain opponents, can bail us out.
“I know it's strange to say this, but it's something we're trying to build here that will be more important than winning a cup right now.”
Yes Ruben, it does sound strange. I get that you’re trying to build something but you can still do that whilst winning a trophy. Your idol Mourinho did the very same thing at the very same club by winning the very same trophy.
He ended up abandoning the league because he knew we weren’t going to get into the Champions League through the PL so it was all on the Europa. We ended up winning that tournament, qualified for the CL and brought in some money which we know we need more than anything right now.
Mourinho also called it quits on the league when we were in 6th which is a position we’d do anything for at the moment.
Winning the Europa League could be one of the better ways to help with this building that Amorim is talking about. Winning any trophy let alone a European one is always a great feeling. This has the potential to boost the confidence of the team, get us back in the Champions League and bring in a good amount of money that we are desperate for.
There will be no Europa football next season at all. We are well behind those places in the league and having been knocked out of the FA Cup we cannot win that to get us back to Thursday nights at least.
It really is all in this campaign in Europe that will make or break this season. It is the most important thing at the moment Ruben. We HAVE to lift this trophy. There’s nothing more to it.
What do these quotes do for the players as well, to hear that their manager is essentially saying that the only trophy and only salvation point for the worst season we've ever had is not as important as we might think?
This is for a squad that is already low on confidence and isn't the strongest mentally besides. This could could further knock down that confidence. Saying something like this isn't what I would want to be hearing from my manager. Even as a fan it's hard to hear.
Can somebody remind him that we’re 15th and out of both cups! He's making it seem like we're in the top 4 and playing good football with some minor issues on and off the field.
All of this makes me for the first time, feel worried about Amorim. This isn't the sort of thing he was saying when he first joined the club as most of that was spot on. This sort of goes against all that he was saying then.
Hearing him talk like this sounds more like he's become another manager who's a mouthpiece for the owners. Ole, Rangnick and ten Hag all succumbed to the same fate.
Look how that ended for them?
So he may as well speak his mind because at least he'll have the fans on his side even if it does result in his axing.
Not sure where or why he's talking like this. Even his smile has disappeared.
He does sound like ten Hag though, doesn't he? Next thing you know he'll be saying 'clear, eh?' and 'trust the process.'
Oh God 😩.
What do you make of our manager's latest comments?
