Under the current form, United's boss feels that should it continue, his future as manager will be discussed even just a few weeks into the job.
Things don't get any easier for the Portuguese as United welcome Newcastle to Old Trafford on Monday night. That is followed by trips to Anfield and The Emirates.
His future will seriously be up for debate in a couple of weeks.
Ruben Amorim admits that everyone expected to win more games despite knowing that it will be a tough start to life at Old Trafford. “I expected it to be tough, but of course you expected to win more games, and have players with more confidence to sell the idea and make it work."
The United boss knows that he isn’t in a comfortable position even though he’s only been in the job for just about two months. Amorim likes the fact that the club can pay the buyout for him: “I’m quite comfortable with that."
With Bruno Fernandes absent for the visit of Newcastle on Monday night after his red card against Wolves, United will be without their captain leaving the question of who will lead the team. Amorim says that we’ll have to wait and see after he was asked whether Harry Maguire will take the armband for match 18.
Instead of the rule change, Amorim would rather use his players in the same way as opponents during set pieces of which United conceded from a corner again questioning what is going wrong with them from set pieces.
With Newcastle on Monday, Eddie Howe will be sure to take advantage of this huge weakness of United’s. The MUFC manager says that the supporters are “tired of this moment” and that we should expect Newcastle to pressure us with balls into the box.
Amorim says that the Magpies are a strong team with a lot of pace. He then mentioned that their players have worked with the same manager [Howe] for a long time and wants his own team to be competitive.
Once again, he was asked about what he would like from the fans to which he said “nothing” as they give everything. "I just want to give something to the fans, not asking the fans something."
Final Thoughts
I think we’re all happy that Amorim is seeing the true nature of these players right away but we can all admit that this type of form has gone too far.
7 league games and four losses with just two wins and performances that are absolutely diabolical. The attitude of the players has been terrible and they couldn’t even give Amorim much of a bounce.
I don’t think he thought things would be this bad as well.
It’s very interesting that he said that he ‘expected the players with more confidence.’ Does he mean more confidence from when he came in, more confidence now or just that they had no confidence at all?
But that is a problem we’ve had for so long that our squad don’t have much confidence which is why we get ourselves into so many of these terrible situations. When times are tough like now, what little confidence they have disappears entirely. That is obviously not something Amorim would’ve expected to see when he joined United.
I guess that the manager will have to be on his toes because of how bad we are but I doubt that the club are thinking about his future already. Despite the poor form, Amorim was the manager INEOS wanted and made so many big decisions before and after his arrival.
He’s probably just saying he’s comfortable with his managerial situation although I’m sure that he’d prefer to be in a better situation.
Rule change or not, we just suck at set pieces both in our own box and the opposition’s. Every time we concede a corner, we are highly likely to let a goal in.
Whatever we do from corners is simply not good enough as it is much too easy for opposition’s to score.
I can already see Newcastle scoring from a corner and from any other chance. Eddie Howe will be licking his lips at our dire situation. Who will even lead us is another matter entirely.
I’m not looking forward to this next match. Or the two following that.
