Lyon 2-2 Man Utd: 5 things learned

Another wasted opportunity

United let the lead slip late on thanks to Onana and ended up making this tie a lot closer than it should've been in the return fixture at Old Trafford.

The United no 1 was the main culprit but there were other performances (both good and bad) that played a part in what turned out to be a disappointing result.

1. Onana

Yeah, we need a new goalkeeper. It's probably as high on the priority list as a striker.

I don't need to say more.

2. Why go long?

United still have this habit of wanting to hit the ball long.

I'm not saying that we should never go long, but we just need to know when to go long. Our players just seem to think that 'we haven't gone long in a while' and boot it up the field.

It ends up going to no one and we lose possession for no reason.

This isn't what Amorim wants to do as he is more a manager who likes to keep things simple and look to move the ball on the ground, work it, rotate the possession and try to progress it up the field with the occassional long ball.

There never appears to be any reason to go long as United never really have the play on one side and then ping it 40 yards cross field to a player in open space on the other flank. Nor does someone make a good run in behind so as to warrant a long ball over the ball.

I'm not sure whether we've even scored or created anything from such passes. This needs to be cut out.

3. Not enough movement

I find that we are too static in our movement. There is nothing really happening up front to even allow us to play those proper long balls.

It's all in front of the opposition defense making it easy for them to defend against. All of Garnacho, Bruno and Hojlund don't look like they truly want to get in behind that back line and try to stretch their defense.

This lack of movement up front is another indication that we need a top forward.

4. Team that ended needs to start

Indeed, the side that finished the match was better than the one that started.

How we looked when Zirkzee, Mount and Mainoo came on was in complete contrast to before their arrivals.

Hojlund was a passenger as striker; Garnacho was careless as a no 10; and Bruno wasn't really impacting the game as much. Zirkzee came on and started to drop deeper and do something different on top of scoring; Mainoo had a hand in that goal as he won a brave header to give Bruno the chance to cross; Mount made himself busy straight away with that spat with Tagliafico and is a player who knows this system better than most; and Bruno was better deeper and ended up getting an assist.

Ugarte was good but needed to come off for fear of a second yellow but Hojlund and Garnacho could do with time on the bench. While Zirkzee may not be a striker, one can clearly see that he is performing much better than his Danish counterpart.

Amorim also has multiple options for those no 10 positions as we saw with Mainoo and Mount meaning he does not need to play Garnacho who has been quite effective as that impact sub.

5. I blame Amorim

Not Onana, no, but the manager.

I think with this goalkeeper, we all knew how bad he was heading into this game. We didn't need Matic to tell us that and nor did Amorim, yet he picked him all the same. In fact, he confirmed the Cameroonian starting in his presser, a day before the match.

Knowing that Onana is a liability and that we need to change 'keepers, he chose to pick Onana anyway and he ended up costing us. Of course we don't expect this and you do back your player, but in the end, it proved to be wrong.

Bayindir has been the cup goalkeeper and while he has come back from a long layoff, if he is on the bench, he can play.

He definitely has to come in now and be the no 1 for next week.

Onana almost singlehandedly cost us the Champions League last season with these type of errors and do we really want to be risking it in the second leg when the stakes are so high? Our ENTIRE season rests on the second leg and we cannot be doubting whether our GK will help us or hinder us.

The manager is also responsible for selecting players like Hojlund and Garnacho who have been given ample opportunities yet continue to fail to take them.

They need dropping as much as the goalkeeper.

Amorim has been here long enough to have realized this.

Yeah, I can talk and talk and talk about the things I love, like football and United, as you can see in this post. Once I get on a roll, it's pretty hard to stop me. This is all coming from a guy who doesn't talk that much. How weird.
