It's no secret that United are interested in signing Wolves' Brazilian forward and best player Matheus Cunha. It has been a potential deal long in the making and for the first time, an amount has been given in relation to this move.
Ben Jacobs says that "Understand Matheus Cunha is on #MUFC's radar, with his agent set to arrive in England for talks with suitors. £62.5m release clause active this summer."
He did add that Nottingham Forest are also in the hunt for his signature.
Forest wanting him could be a bit of a problem. I know they don't have the glamour and aura of Man United but they can offer him more as they look set to play Champions League football next season whereas MUFC have to win the Europa League to ensure any European football.
Forest also recently did the double over us and are further ahead in their development under Nuno Espirito Santo whilst United are just 5 months into their journey under Amorim.
Will Cunha want to be part of a rebuild at a club in turmoil and who suck on the field?
Other reports have said that he would prefer a move to a big six club despite Forest's interest, however. Maybe there's a chance?
That release clause though isn't out of the realms of possibily even for a financially impeded United. £62m is nowadays considered a decent price for a player like Cunha.
At 25 years old, he is just about hitting his prime yet has many years ahead. The Brazilian is also Premier League proven which can make a difference.
He's also bagged 15 goals and 4 assists for Wolves in the 29 matches he's played. Not a bad return at all for a player in a team that isn't necessarily known for its goals.
Play Style
The Brazilian is a very versatile player who can operate across the front line and even do a job in midfield whenever necessary. Being able to move about the attack means he can go wherever he wants whenever he feels it’s needed to move into this position or that.
Cunha combines his close ball control and dribbling as a way to get by defenders when attacking. The former Atletico Madrid man also has a great pass on him particularly in that final third. In fact, the Brazilian is ranked joint-10th for most big chances created in the Premier League this season with 12, the same as a certain Bruno Fernandes.
Despite his 13 goals in the PL though, one of his weaknesses is Cunha’s inability up front as he can be a bit wasteful although as the season has progressed, so has his ability in front of goal improved.
As he is a Brazilian, there is that flair that is synonymous with the country.
Cunha is also a player who plays in a 3-4-3 system under Vitor Pereira at Wolves meaning that he will slot into Amorim’s pretty seamlessly, which is another reason to go and sign him.
He does have his disciplinary issues though. There's been two instances this campaign in which he's found himself in hot water.
In December after their 2-1 defeat to Ipswich, he was given a two-match suspension after an altercation with one of Ipswich's security guards.
His latest problem came not so long ago after they were beaten by Bournemputh in the FA Cup.
The Brazilian was involved in an altercation in which the Wolves' player lashed out at Bournemouth's Milos Kerkez. Cunha was given a straight red for violent conduct and had to be escorted off the ptich.
The FA then gave him an extra game ban on top of the three for the red card. The forward admitted to improper conduct and was fined £50 000.
This could be a problem for United. It's great that he has that typical South American fight and passion but if he cannot control it, it could work against him and the team.
I don't mind a bit of a hothead but this is a bit far.
Wolves currently sit 17th in the table but have a healthy 12 point gap to Ipswich in 18th. They will survive this season.
But as they have been struggling all campaign and Cuncha is clearly their best player who does deserve a big move, will he be content if he happened to stay for at least another season?
His current deal expires in June 2029. Perhaps he himself would be pushing for this move because he will end up wasting time at Wolves when he should be at a bigger club given his quality.
I believe he ticks a lot of the boxes we need in a player at United: great age, quality and versatility, PL proven and definitely has that something extra about him.
If we were a serious club, Cunha would be a player we go and get.
